Limited Edition Slipcase + This Is Cinématographe: A Journal of American Cinema - Fall 2025. Limited to 500 units. (Sold Out)
Taking its name from the Lumière Brothers invention of the same name, Cinématographe is a new sub-label from Vinegar Syndrome that seeks to fill gaps in the canon of American cinema. Offering a mix of auteur driven studio films produced during the New Hollywood era of the late 1960s and 70s all the way through the indie boom of the 1980s and 90s, Cinématographe will explore the wide breadth of American moviemaking, spanning numerous genres and scales of production. Curated and produced by Vinegar Syndrome's Justin LaLiberty, each limited edition release will be housed in a specially designed, cloth-bound, media book with embossed foil titles and custom molded disc trays accompanied by a slipcase featuring newly commissioned art and an individually numbered J-card.
Bradford “Big Brad” Whitewood Sr. (Christopher Walken, King of New York) is the leader of a rural Pennsylvania gang of career criminals and his son, Bradford “Little Brad” Whitewood Jr. (Sean Penn, State of Grace), is an unemployed teenager who decides he wants a taste of his father’s flashy lifestyle and the power that comes with it. Embarking on a budding life of crime with his brother Tommy (played by Sean Penn’s real life brother Chris Penn, True Romance), Little Brad gets arrested, sparking a tense showdown between father and son, and their family and friends who get caught in the middle.
Based on the real life Pennsylvania gang run by Bruce Johnston, from a script by Nicholas Kazan (Patty Hearst), At Close Range marks the sophomore feature for acclaimed American genre filmmaker James Foley (Glengarry Glen Ross; After Dark, My Sweet). Featuring an eclectic ensemble cast that puts the leads opposite Mary Stuart Masterson (Fried Green Tomatoes), Crispin Glover (River’s Edge), Tracey Walter (Repo Man), David Strathairn (Matewan), and Kiefer Sutherland (Stand By Me) with striking night time cinematography by regularly Foley collaborator Juan Ruiz Anchía (Glengarry Glen Ross, The Corruptor), Foley’s film is one of the great American crime films of the 1980s. Cinématographe is proud to present the world 4K UHD debut of James Foley’s masterclass in true crime drama in a brand new restoration from its original camera negative.

At Close Range (also release The Plague!)
"Cinematographe is a fantastic line, and it should host Charlie Polinger’s The Plague from 2025, a movie just begging for a wider spotlight since IFC totally botched its release last year. Polinger also has several great short films that should be on the disc too."
— Andrew W. (5/5)
Stellar Acting
"Came for the Madonna song, stayed for the electrifying Walken and Penn performances. This is a beautiful 4K transfer that we’ve come to expect from Cinématographe."
— Paul C. (5/5)
Sleeper Hit of the Stack
"This is a gorgeous-looking disc for a genuinely underrated crime drama. The new restoration nails the moody nighttime cinematography with deep, varied color and sharp detail throughout — there are a few moments where skin tones lean a little too red/orange, but it's a minor nitpick in an otherwise excellent transfer. The stereo track makes that haunting slowed-down "Live to Tell" score hit hard during the quieter, dialogue-free stretches. You also get a 1080p SDR disc alongside the 4K if you want to compare. Same beautiful MediaBook/slipcase format as the rest of the Cinématographe line, with essays from four different critics in the booklet. Easily one of the most pleasant surprises of this whole haul — "highly recommended" doesn't undersell it."
— Alex R. (5/5)
Great release of a top quality movie!
"This is a really good movie with an impressive cast. The deluxe cinématographe release features amazing picture and sound quality, fantastic new artwork, and lots of great extras. This is a top-notch package all around, but I think I need to watch the movie again because I'm pretty sure Kiefer Sutherland didn't even say a single word, or did I just blink and miss it?"
— Aaron B. (5/5)
At Close Range
"this boutique release earns perfect marks across physical media circles for both its visual presentation and massive supplementary package"
— Brian G. (4/5)
Come Closer
"At Close Range is a tense, slow-burn crime drama that leans heavily on atmosphere and character rather than action. Sean Penn delivers a gripping performance as a young man drawn into his father’s violent world, while Christopher Walken is chillingly controlled and unpredictable. The film’s grounded tone and emotional weight make it unsettling in a way that lingers long after it ends."
— Shawn M. (4/5)
Another Great Cinematographe 4K Release!
"I hadn’t seen this one in a decade, remember enjoying it, but wow, revisiting this in 4K was such a treat, much better film than I remembered, very enjoyable, solid 80s dark-drama. Great performances. Incredible packaging, new interviews, impressive transfer… What’s not to like?!? Highly recommended!"
— Matthew L. (5/5)

— Matt T. (5/5)
Live to Tell
"Sean Penn stands out with iconic Madonna single Live to Tell playing in the background. The performances are all strong with great extras and a classic film."
— Michael P. (5/5)
