RED SURF is part of our Vinegar Syndrome Archive collection, celebrating forgotten cinematic oddities from the video store era. This collection was inspired by our own brick & mortar video store, The Archive in Bridgeport, CT.

Unique to this line, each hand numbered limited edition release will come fitted in a specially designed, bottom loading VHS inspired slipcase, while also including a double-sided poster.

These releases will ONLY be available on our website and at participating indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them. This slipcase edition is strictly limited to 5,000 units and may (but probably not) be followed by a standard edition in the future.

Remar (George Clooney) and Attila (Dog Savant) are best friends living in California. They spend their days surfing, partying, and running drugs for a ruthless gangster named Calavera. After finding out his girlfriend is pregnant, Remar must choose between living life in the fast lane or settling down to take care of his family. Struggling to come to terms with his new future, Remar decides to set up one last big score before retiring from his life of crime, however, things get complicated for him and Attila when one of their crew betrays them. Now, Remar and Attila have to figure out how to make it out alive before Calavera tracks them down and literally feeds them to the wolves.

Overflowing with drugs, booze, and guns, RED SURF is a violent look at 1980s surfing culture in California. Featuring a surprise early performance from George Clooney (From Dusk Till Dawn, Out of Sight) as the drug addicted Remar in one of his first leading roles, as well as strong performances from Doug Savant (Teen Wolf), 80s heartthrob Dedee Pfeiffer (Vamp), and KISS singer/bass player Gene Simmons (Trick or Treat). Vinegar Syndrome Archive is proud to present this piece of punk rock cinema for the first time on Blu-ray, scanned and restored in 4k from its 35mm original camera negative.

When Surfing Runs Red

"Red Surf (1989), directed by H. Gordon Boos, is a true hidden gem in the VS/VSA catalog. This gritty, sun-soaked thriller boasts a killer cast: a young George Clooney, Doug Savant, Dedee Pfeiffer, Philip McKeon, Gene Simmons (KISS), and Vincent Klyn (Cyborg) all deliver in their roles. The film looks fantastic thanks to the stunning cinematography by John Schwartzman (who later shot The Rock, Armageddon, and Pearl Harbor!). The tension, style, and late-80s vibe hold up surprisingly well, and I especially loved the song that closes the picture. Highly recommended for fans of cult action, beach-noir, and 80s genre cinema. This VSA release is a must-own. I’d also love to see VS/VSA tackle two more H. Gordon Boos titles: Perfect Assassins (1998) and The Vivero Letter (2000). They’d fit perfectly alongside Red Surf in the line!"

Pedro G. (5/5)
