The Dead Thing

If you’ve ever been in the dating app scene you will get this movie. Is it the most perfectly executed movie, no, but it definitely speaks to a modern day downside of the dating scene.

The Dead Thing really worked for me because it takes something completely normal — bad dates, hookups, and trying to find some kind of connection — and slowly turns it into something much darker. The relationship at the center starts off strangely intimate, then the movie keeps peeling back layers until the whole thing feels more obsessive and unsettling than romantic.

I liked how restrained the horror is too. It doesn’t need constant gore or jump scares. A lot of the tension comes from the encounters themselves, the loneliness underneath everything, and that feeling that something is just slightly wrong long before you fully understand why.

The limited slipcover is a big part of the appeal for me too. The artwork is simple, weird, and immediately stands out on the shelf without giving too much away.

Creepy, sad, intimate, and a lot more haunting than I expected. Easy 5/5 for me. 😁

feels heavily inspired by classic 90s erotic thrillers. It's a slow burn, but it delivers.

It has strong performances and atmosphere and an air of mystery. Blu Hunt is amazing as Alex trying to find some meaning to her life by dating.

Excellent film from an excellent director!
